TCN Expands Grid Capacity With New Yobe Transformer

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 60MVA, 132/33kV mobile power transformer at the Damaturu Transmission Substation in Yobe State, increasing the facility’s capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA and boosting electricity supply reliability in the country’s northeast.
The state-owned transmission operator said the newly installed transformer is designed to improve the flexibility and stability of power supply across Damaturu and surrounding communities by providing additional capacity and serving as backup during maintenance operations or unexpected outages.

In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company said the upgrade would enable the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) to receive more bulk electricity from Nigeria’s national grid for onward distribution to customers in Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital and neighbouring areas.

Mbah said the additional transformer would also help the substation meet rising electricity demand, supporting improved power supply for households, businesses and public institutions across the region.

The project was financed through TCN’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), reflecting ongoing efforts by the utility to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improve the efficiency and reliability of bulk electricity delivery nationwide.
